what is ½ micron when it is describing jewellry?
I have been looking for some earring on the web and the ones I like are described as ½ micron 22 carot hard gold or silver plate. Whatd eos this mean in regard to quality?
a micron is 1/1000 of a millimeter.
1/2 a micron is a very thin layer of precious metal over cheap base metal. It will wear off quickly.
Higher quality vermeil (gold plated over sterling silver) must have at least 2.5 microns of gold plate on top and even that doesn't last forever.
The quality you describe is costume jewelry, only meant to last a short time. If you want something more durable, you will have to look out for vermeil or gold filled.
