What type of earring should I use for my cartilage piercing?
A normal lobe stud with a 'butterfly' back:

I'm guessing it's the rounded ball back, but I can't seem to find one anywhere (besides ebay).
Any advice?
I agree with the first answerer.
The L shaped earrings are really good for cartilage piercings, I have used them for a few years.
Nose rings are very good for the L shape back, some of them flip as well (like move up and down so the earring won't slip out by accident if you brush your ear - it happens!)
