What kind of gemstone is this?
I went on vacation a couple years ago and had a necklace made from a gem I found. (By found, I mean they gave me a bucket full of mud, average rocks, and gems, and I got to sift through it to find unpolished gems.) They told me it was jasper. It is an oval-shaped pendant without a back. When holding it against a dark surface it appears to be a very dark green and slightly blue color, with strings of white. When you hold it up to a bright light, the gem is completely see through at parts and looks like some sort of dark green and white moss that has been preserved in a clear resin. Is this jasper? None of the pictures I've seen look like it. Thank you.

The stone in your picture is known as Moss Agate. It is a crypto-crystalline variety of quartz. The green "moss" inside it is, in fact, not plant material at all but can be composed of various minerals including chlorite and some manganese compounds. It is not particularly rare but is very pretty and each stone is unique as the patterns are never the same in any two stones.
