Testing a Diamond that is in a ring?
My (?diamond?) is mounted in a 925 Sterling Silver Ring. i want to test if it is a real diamond without going to the jewelers, because they charge so much money to get it tested. because it's mounted in a ring, i cant do the newspaper test, or the scratching on glass test. Someone help?
It is unusual for a diamond to be mounted in silver, but I have seen it done. I have a client who likes white metals but due to the nickel content in white gold has allergic reactions to white gold ( which is not uncommon, btw ) and didn't want to spend a lot of money on platinum. She had her diamonds set in Sterling silver instead.
The glass scratch test will not help you, since other gems other than diamond will scratch glass as well. If you want to buy a diamond probe, most lapidaries carry them. They start at around $75.
Your best bet is to call your local jewelers to find one who will not charge to test your gemstone. I never charge people for a diamond test, and the majority of my fellow jewelers don't either. Be sure to have the gem tested with both a diamond probe and a Moissanite/synthetic diamond tester if the gem does test as being a diamond. It only takes a few minutes.
To answer Hat-A-Tat, the newspaper test is one that is used with a loose gemstone. If someone thinks a gem might be diamond, one quick way to test at home is to take the loose gem and place the large table facet on newspaper. If you can read the newsprint through the gem, it is not diamond. The refraction of the diamond prevents you from reading the printing. ( This doesn't work on a poorly cut diamond however )
