topside goes from microscopic rows of crystal to a cluster of visable octohedrals and then a single 7 tiered rhombohederal.
First, it is fairly common for crystals to have different forms on the same specimen. Gold is in the isometric (or cubic) crystal system and it often forms octahedrons. Sometimes the octahedrons can be modified by the cube shape or, more rarely the dodecahedral shape.
Second, because gold often forms later in the mineralizations sequence, it can form over other crystals that have already been formed. Then the other crystals are dissolved away and leave molds in the gold. These shapes are of the removed crystals and can be almost anything.
