Ivory Statues, jewelry, carvings, etc?

I love antiques, statues, etc. I am visiting India next year, if I buy a piece of Ivory can I take it out of India and get it into the United States?
Another question, I saw somewhere on the internet you can only take a certain amount of gifts out of India $180.00, is this correct? Or is it that if I buy my daughter a gold bracelet, I just have to pay the Tarif tax, if it is over that amount?
Buy the Statues from Govt. run emporium, they will help you to ship it to your home (Check before buying if they are going to pack and ship it for you, if they do, personally supervise it while packing). Most cases they do, particularly with Foreign Nationals, because we the local people don't buy from these emporiums, we know the sourcing/originating place and usually pick up from there when we travel.
Buying Ivory Item from Govt. emporium is much recommended so that you don't get into the trouble of Wildlife Protection Act as well. No Bargain in Govt. Emporiums.
For Gold jewellery, best way to take it home is just wearing it while traveling and claiming that it's a used one....not bought in India. Remember to bargain (Yes!! even for Gold....they may give you discount upto 10% of the listed price). Tell them you can pay them in Cash and in USD.....you get a better deal! Usually this works excellent with Big Jewelers in Bandra (Mumbai).
One word of caution! Don't try to buy anything Antique
Reason no.1. Mostly you get FAKE antique, treated articles that looks like periodic. The moment you utter the word Antique, the seller smells the blood and look for the kill. So chances are you buy a FAKE with 10 times price.
Reason no. 2. Antiques are prohibited items to be carried out the country, so even if you get a REAL antique, chances are you get stuck at the Airport itself.
